After 17 years of trying to become a mother, Ajibola Taiwo from Western Nigeria gave birth to sextuplets May 11 at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. She had three boys and three girls delivered by cesarean section with the help of a 40-person medical team.
Ajibola, whose age has yet to be released, was 30 weeks and two days pregnant at the time. (The American College of Obstetricians and Gynocologists considers thirty-nine weeks full-term.) All the babies were born teeny-tiny, with the smallest one weighing just 1 pound 10 ounces at birth.
Luckily, all are in good condition, according to a May 24 VCU press release. "Given their prematurity, they are doing exceptionally well," said Russell Moores, M.D., medical director of the neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, where the babies are being cared for.
