More and more news comes in from the areas of the U.S. affected by Hurricane Harvey, most of it bad; five people have been reported dead in its aftermath,
while officials warn of the catastrophic toll of the storm. But there's at least one story traveling out of the region that reaffirms humanity's ability for goodness.
KHOU reporter Brandi Smith was reporting during the storm, and kept reporting even as the station she reported for flooded.
She and photographer Mario Sandoval kept streaming
video at Beltway 8 and Hardy Toll Road, and that's when Sandoval saw a
truck driver trapped in his vehicle, water closing in around him.
Fortunately, sheriff's deputies were passing by, and Smith flagged them
down and then reported through the rescue: "I don’t have any
word on how long he’s been there or what kind of condition he’s in. I’m
sure he’s very wet, very cold, very frightened. I am terrified for him,
so I can’t imagine the level of fear he has here."
Though
the rescue footage itself never aired because, after all, the station
was flooded, other people saw and shared what happened:
Smith herself has since left her reporting perch, and shared the following on Twitter:
