The idea of paying money for dating help isn't new.
(See: The history of the matchmaking business.) But if anyone was
wondering if dating apps can cash in on people's quests for love and
other relationships, the answer is definitively yes.
That's because
Tinder just became the top-grossing app in the iOS store.
Tinder introduced "Tinder Gold"
in a limited launch this June. The app had previously introduced
"Tinder Plus," which costs $9.99 monthly; the Plus feature introduced
the world to Rewind, Passport, and other features. Tinder Gold adds
another $4.99 on top of the Plus subscription, but crucially allows you
to see to see who likes you with a feature called, uh, "Likes You."
In
a financially smart move, Tinder's only allowing Plus members to then
upgrade into "Gold," which means that Tinder Gold might've spurred a
bunch of people who'd been using the app for free to cough up the cash
and see who's swiping them.
The company plans to roll out Tinder Gold for Android phones next month,
so that everyone can join in the fun (and yes, drama) of poring over
who "Likes You."
